يحكى أنه في قديم الزمان كان رجل عجوز ، له ثلاثة أبناء ، وكانوا جميعًا يعيشون في حب وسعادة .
وفى أحد الأيام مرض الأب ، وازداد الألم عليه حتى اقترب من الموت ، وكان الأبناء الثلاثة يتنافسون في خدمة أبيهم و تمريضه .
فطلب الابن الأصغر من إخوته أن يسمحوا له بأخذ أبيه إلى بيته ؛ ليتفرغ لخدمته وتمريضه، رفض الأبناء في البداية ولكنهم وافقوا عندما أخبرهم أخوهم أنه سوف يتنازل لهم عن نصيبه من ميراث أبيه،
وأخذ الابن الأصغر أباه إلى منزله، وتعاون الزوجان على رعاية الأب المريض وخدمته حتى مات.
وفى إحدى الليالي رأى الابن أباه في المنام ، فأخبره أنه قد خبأ كنزًا في مكان بعيد، وفى الصباح ذهب الابن إلى المكان الذي حدده أبوه ، فوجد صندوقًا صغيرًا مملوءًا بالجواهر والأموال ،
أخذ الابن الصندوق ، وذهب إلى إخوته ، فقص عليهم ما حدث، فقالوا له :
لقد تنازلت لنا عن نصيبك في ميراث أبيك ، وليس لك حق في هذه الأموال !
وفى الليلة التالية رأى حلمًا مماثلاً ، وعندما عثر على الأموال ذهب بها إلى إخوته ، فأخذوها منه ، وقالوا له كما قالوا من قبل .
وعاد الابن إلى بيته حزينًا ، فلما نام رأى أباه في منامه ؛ فأخبره أنه وضع دينارًا في جرة الماء في حقلهم البعيد ، فذهب الابن إلى إخوته ، فلما أخبرهم بما رأى ، أخذوا يسخرون منه، وقالوا له :
دينار واحد ؟! .. خذه أنت إن شئت .
ذهب الابن إلى الحقل ، فأخذ الدينار وبينما هو في الطريق قابل صيادًا عجوزًا يعرض سمكتين للبيع فاقترب منه وسأله :
بكم تبيع هاتين السمكتين ؟!
فقال الصياد : لا أريد سوى دينار واحد .
فأعطاه الدينار وأخذ السمكتين ، وحينما وصل إلى البيت أعطى السمكتين لزوجته، وطلب منها أن تعدهما للطعام .
وما إن شقت الزوجة بطن السمكة الأولى حتى وجدت شيئًا يلمع ، فلما أخرجته ، وجدت جوهرة كبيرة ، ومدت الزوجة يدها بالسكين لتفتح بطن السمكة الأخرى ، فكانت المفاجأة ،
لقد وجدت جوهرة ثانية في بطن السمكة الأخرى. وتناقل الناس أخبار تلك الجوهرة الثمينة، فلما علم الملك أمر بإحضارها له ، وكافأ الرجل عليها بأموال كثيرة.
